The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York cancelled the retrospective John Galliano: Horizons, which had been scheduled to open on 9 May 2027. New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin and others had previously opposed the exhibition. The controversy stemmed from Galliano's previous “antisemitic” remarks. At a bar in 2010, Galliano insulted another person using remarks containing “antisemitic” content, and in 2011 insulted two people at a bar using remarks containing “antisemitic” and “racist” content. He was subsequently found guilty of “public insults based on origin, religion, race or ethnicity”. Galliano said that he “remain[s] fully accountable for the pain caused by [his] words in the past”, and that “meaningful atonement is not achieved through an exhibition, institutional recognition or a single public gesture”. The Metropolitan Museum of Art said that it was a “joint decision to cancel” the exhibition.
