Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell Music and 33 other companies sue Anthropic and CEO Dario Amodei for copyright infringement
Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell Music and 33 other companies filed a copyright infringement lawsuit in the US District Court for the Northern District of California against Anthropic, its chief executive officer Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann. The plaintiffs alleged that Anthropic illegally obtained copyrighted lyrics and sheet music from piracy websites and other sources and used them without permission for purposes including training its generative AI model Claude. The plaintiffs sought damages including up to US$150,000 for each infringed work. Anthropic told Nikkei that it disagreed with the publishers' claims and would vigorously contest them in court.
