加拿大首相麥克・卡尼（Mark Carney）表示，加拿大決定暫停與美國的貿易談判，已要求加拿大談判代表返回。加拿大方面認爲美方在最後階段提出的條件「不可接受」。美國方面稱，加拿大「於最後提出新要求、撤回原先承諾，導致協議無法達成」。安大略省省長福特 (Doug Ford) 則批評美國總統川普 (Donald Trump) 在談判期間多次改變條件。對於二十二日開始，美國對約二百億美元之加拿大商品課徵50%關稅，加拿大首相卡尼宣佈將按照與美國關稅同等金額之原則，向美國貨品徵收對等關稅。預計自九月八日起實施，涉及鋼鐵、乳製品、電子產品、家電、農業設備等。
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada had decided to suspend trade negotiations with the USA and had directed Canada’s negotiators to return. The Canadian side said that the conditions put forward by the USA at the final stage were ‘unacceptable’. The USA said that Canada had ‘made new demands at the last minute and withdrawn previous commitments, resulting in the failure to reach an agreement’. Ontario Premier Doug Ford criticised President Donald Trump of the USA for repeatedly changing the terms during the negotiations. In response to the USA imposing 50% tariffs from 22 August on approximately US$20 billion worth of Canadian goods, Prime Minister Carney announced that Canada would impose retaliatory tariffs on goods from the USA on a dollar-for-dollar basis with the USA tariffs. The measures are expected to take effect from 8 September and cover steel, dairy products, electronics, household appliances, agricultural equipment and other goods.
