The Panama Canal Authority announces a reduction in vessel transits due to the El Niño phenomenon

The Panama Canal Authority has stated that, due to the El Niño phenomenon, water levels of two reservoirs that supply water to the Canal are low. As a result, from 3 September, the number of vessels permitted to pass through the Canal each day will be reduced from 36 to 34. From 15 September, this figure will be reduced to 32 vessels. The authority stated that rainfall in the Canal region from May to August was 34 per cent below the historical average, and added that the El Niño phenomenon may lead to a further reduction in rainfall.
