NASA says mission to prevent Swift Observatory satellite from burning up in the atmosphere fails

NASA said that a mission to raise the orbital altitude of the Swift Observatory satellite to prevent it from falling into the atmosphere and burning up has failed due to a technical malfunction affecting the unmanned spacecraft carrying out the mission. Launched on 20 November 2004, the Swift Observatory is an astronomical satellite used to observe phenomena including gamma-ray bursts. However, increased atmospheric drag caused by heightened solar activity has affected the observatory's orbit. According to NASA's prediction, the satellite could naturally re-enter the atmosphere and burn up this autumn if no intervention is carried out.
