Russian President Putin visits Iturup Island, one of the islands disputed between Russia and Japan
Russian President Vladimir Putin travelled to Iturup Island in the southern Kuril Islands and visited a fish-processing plant. This was Putin's first in-person visit to the territories disputed between Russia and Japan in the southern Kuril Islands (called the 'Southern Kuril Islands' by Russia and the 'Northern Territories' by Japan, and under Russian control). Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi lodged a strong protest over the visit.
