Media reports say 'Lanzhou Lamian' restaurants in many parts of China have been renamed 'Qinghai Lamian'
According to media reports, 'Lanzhou Lamian (Hand-Pulled Noodle)' restaurants in many parts of China have recently been renamed 'Qinghai Lamian'. The reports said that the traditional noodle dish in Lanzhou is generally known as 'Lanzhou beef noodles', or 'Niuda' for short, while the name 'Lanzhou Lamian' was mostly used by people from Hualong, Jainca and other parts of Qinghai when expanding their businesses by drawing on the reputation of Lanzhou beef noodles. As preparation methods and flavours vary from place to place, disputes have gradually emerged over the branding and trademarks of 'Lanzhou Lamian' and 'Lanzhou beef noodles'. The reports noted that the broth of Lanzhou beef noodles is made by stewing beef and lamb liver and is characterised by its clarity, while the broth of Qinghai Lamian is made from beef and chicken bones and is characteristically cloudy and thick. In June this year, 72 'Lanzhou Lamian' restaurants in Tianjin were renamed 'Qinghai Lamian'. An operator of a 'Qinghai Lamian' restaurant on Hengshan Road in Nanjing said that both the operator and their business partner were from Qinghai and that, in line with the local government's promotion of the brand, the restaurant had changed its name from 'Lanzhou Lamian' two years earlier. Another operator who opened a restaurant this year said that 'Qinghai' better reflected where the business came from.
