University of Tokyo announces disciplinary action against professor for embedding ‘inappropriate words’ in websites of affiliated departments

The University of Tokyo announced on the 4th that it had imposed a three-day suspension from work on a professor, effective 29 July, for embedding ‘inappropriate words’ in the HTML source code of the homepages of the academic programme and laboratory with which the professor was affiliated. According to a government source, the disciplinary action concerned the embedding of the string ‘六四天安門’ (Chinese characters relating to the 4 June and the Tiananmen Square) in websites associated with the university, which came to light around 2024.
