Around 60,000 people illegally entered Ceuta from Morocco over the past several days. The Spanish Government said that, as of 18:00 local time on the 31st, around 48,300 people had returned to Morocco. According to the Spanish Government, the number of deaths in the incident had reached 67. Ceuta is not part of the Schengen Area. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares noted that anyone entering the European mainland part of Spain from Ceuta or Melilla must undergo identity checks by the police, and declared that the integrity of the Schengen free-travel area was ‘fully guaranteed’. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Friday that, in response to the incident, Italy had decided to suspend the ‘Schengen Agreement’ with Spain for one month.
