臺灣行政院今日正式覈定西拉雅族爲法定原住民族。臺灣立法院去年十月通過「平埔原住民族群身分法」。依其規定，於各平埔原住民族族羣向原民會申請民族認定，並經審議會審議通過，報行政院覈定後，個人方能到戶政事務所辦理相關身份登記。西拉雅族成爲臺灣行政院覈定通過之首個平埔原住民族，及第十七個法定原住民族。
Taiwan’s Executive Yuan formally recognises the Siraya as an Indigenous people under law
Taiwan’s Executive Yuan today formally recognised the Siraya as an Indigenous people under law. Taiwan’s Legislative Yuan passed the Status Act for Plains Indigenous Peoples last October. Under its provisions, each Plains Indigenous people must apply to the Council of Indigenous Peoples for recognition as a distinct people. Only after the application has been approved by a review committee and submitted to the Executive Yuan for approval may individuals register the relevant status at a household registration office. The Siraya have become the first Plains Indigenous people approved by Taiwan’s Executive Yuan and the seventeenth Indigenous people recognised under law.
