Naoero

President Adeang announced that, bypassing a referendum, the Country’s English Official Name Would be Formally Changed to Naonero

In May, the Parliament of Naoero (then known as Nauru) passed a constitutional amendment to change the country’s official English name to Naoero. Whilst the original plan had been to hold a national referendum, on the 29 July, President Adeang stated that ‘following careful deliberation, it has been decided not to proceed with the referendum, as “Naoero” is not a new name that requires the people’s approval’, and announced the name change. According to reports, the Nauruan authorities have formally notified various countries and international organisations of the change to the country’s name, and the relevant transitional procedures have already begun.
