熊本爲震央發生M7.1級地震。熊本縣嘉島町商業設施「永旺商城熊本」二樓、外牆等崩壞，多人受困。八代北部地域醫療中心出現六十人以上傷者，受地震影響停電達到四万八千戶。據熊本縣警察及消防等部門，宇城市、八代市、熊本市等地發生多起火災、房屋倒壞，並有人員受困。

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck with its epicentre in Kumamoto. Parts of the second floor and exterior walls of Aeon Mall Kumamoto, a shopping centre in Kashima, Kumamoto Prefecture, collapsed, leaving many people trapped. More than sixty injured people were taken to the Yatsushiro Northern Regional Medical Centre, while power cuts affected 48,000 households. According to the Kumamoto Prefectural Police, fire services and other authorities, fires, collapsed homes and incidents of people being trapped were reported in Uki, Yatsushiro, Kumamoto and other cities.
